“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
This verse is one of confusing verses for me. I really don’t understand why we must be poor in spirit. I tried to read some commentary here and some said it is referring on being poor in earthly possession. But i’m not well convinced as Jesus used the word spirit. He can easily say the word “poor” as what He did in other verse dealing with the word poor if He is just merely on poverty. But with the word spirit, I know He meant something different.
As I’m writing this, the following verse came up to me. “for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” so this is an opposite. Being the opposite He can probably referring to poverty. So that’s my insight. You will find teachings in bible constructed in this way like, “although he was rich, for your sake he became poor” and “So the last will be first, and the first last. “
Another thing from what I had read, Jesus is referring to humbleness. As a Christian we can say to ourselves that we know our God, we know Jesus, we are rich in spirit. But we need to be humble and still we should say that we are poor in spirit.
Now what came to my mind is how Jesus humble himself as one of his disciples called him good and yet He replied, only God in heaven is good. So we can also say that as a Christian when someone said that we are good, that we know God’s word and we know him, we are rich in spirit – no I’m still poor in spirit.
I’m accepting more insight here, enlighten me in this verse. God Bless.
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.”
This verse is actually for those unbeliever who think of themselves as wise since they are not for them to believe without scientific explanation or simply faith. It is like Solomon the wisest man (1 Kings 4:30 ) anticipated that this going to happen from those man who believe to be wise.
Even me, I questioned about God’s existence without fearing him before and I believe in myself that I’m wise because I’m not that easy to believe on things that I can’t see. But thanks God as He unfolded himself to me and that is the beginning of my true knowledge, I started to fear Him.
“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
I believe this is where they got when they said that death penalty is in the bible. First let me say that I will say this not for us to get divided with our belief but to share some insight to everyone as I’m willing to listen to your insight too.
I remember 6 years ago when the leader of the biggest protestant church here in Philippines ran for president. He was on debate while the issue is about death penalty which is sensitive topic here in our country. Actually he was my bet knowing that he is a man of God and I’m so tired with corrupted politician here in PH. So he asked if he is pro for death penalty as once elected he is going to bring back this sentence. He said, “yes.as this is written in the bible.”
Of course I got shock with his answer but I know he is not lying as with this statement that will give him bad images as politician. But I know he can’t also lie about God’s word as what he believes about it.
That debate had been discussed also in our catholic community and why this christian presidentiable said it was written in bible? Do the God of Love allows such as life-taking penalty? Our leader told me yes it is in Romans 6:23.
Well that presidentiable failed. No doubt.
Now the well-known Manny Pacquiao ran and got a place in senate in recent election held here in Philippines. We all know that he is christian. He has been asked the same question about death penalty and he answered the same as he said this is written in the bible.
Very sensitive case and if I’m going to ask, I am also yes to it. Death is inevitable, good people die and so be with bad. But I know in my heart, who am I to judge. What if God is giving them chance to renew his life and with death penalty we are taking away his chance to know Jesus.
If really death is wages of sin, why not let God be the judge of taking the life he once gave to us.
And for 2nd insight. With the verse, I believe that Jesus already paid the price for our death. So Romans 6:23 is still applicable? I know bible is absolute but I’m talking about do bible still encourage death penalty despite of what Jesus done wit us?
Please enlighten me. God Bless.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. “
I have this verse in frame in my room. One of my favorite verses that I keep on remembering when I’m in trials. I remember before after accepting Jesus Christ and yet doesn’t have faith of trusting him in whatever happens. I keep on questioning him about despite of following him still I’m always on trial. I even remember telling to myself, “It seems it is better before not believing to God as I’m not hoping that He will help me, that there is someone to help me”
Well I was wrong with that because if I’m going to think about my life, those up and down, it always end with good and I believe God worked on it. And with the verse from Proverbs, I just have in frame so I will never lean in my understanding but to always trust Jesus.
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”
In my life, I had liked worship and spiritual songs first before Christ. I don’t believe in God before but the only thing I don’t understand is why I really like singing Christian songs. I love music as this is part of my life and the fact that I don’t understand is the power of spiritual songs. Every time I play and sing godly songs I feel serenity, happy and encouraged in life which I can’t explain. I feel different things with the song and even I keep convincing myself before that God is not real, the song let me feel He is. Not with the lyrics as an unbeliever the word “Hallelujah” doesn’t matter to me. But the melody, and everything in music, God moved within me.
I know my insight seems not directly for the verse this day but upon seeing spiritual songs, that is the first thing always come to my mind as this is my prove that God is real even to me that I’m not believing to Him before.
I was wronged when I thought of God only for those who believe Him. Like you need faith to please Him, for Him to give you favor. But yes His grace is sufficient to all of us.
“Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
Jesus is God. This is an endless argument to those who don’t believe in trinity With Philippians 2:9-11, this solved the argument. We know that we should only worship God and with this verse of worshiping Jesus as every knee should bow in heaven on earth, no doubt that Jesus is God.
Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.”
This is the biggest question for a Christian. Do we love Christ? Yes we have faith, we believe in Him that we are going to save us and everything of his promises. But then again do we love Him?
The question will be followed by, are we following and keeping His words? This is the biggest challenge to our faith. Following is the sign that we love him. This is how we will know if we really love Him and not only by words.
